Compiz Fusion

June 29, 2007

The Developers of Beryl and Compiz
have united their efforts in creating a compositing window manager that uses OpenGL to render some awesome 3D effects. So Beryl is thus discontinued, but is still supported. The announcement here on the Compiz mailing list indicates that the new merged community has named the project Compiz Fusion. The project currently has a development version that you can install, but the official release is not out yet. Plans are also being made to add it to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 (afaik). I installed it last night (Compiz Fusion that is) simply to test it out. I was expecting a fairly problematic install, however things went along just well following this guide.

A new, but not so new start…

June 21, 2007

Started off by installing Kubuntu on the desktop yesterday and ran into a few issues. For some odd reason the installer would’nt allow me to create a third primary partition. The installer appears to have some restriction to kinda “ensure you do the right thing”. Unlike the the previous version of the installers. The second thing I noticed was the removal of many of my favourite application in the default install such as Firefox. I feel that Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper was more ideal and suited my needs well on the desktop.
